Welcome

to

Colombia

Colombia’s equatorial position affords it a diversity of landscapes matched by few countries. A slight adjustment in altitude takes you from sun-toasted Caribbean sands to coffee-strewn, emerald-green hilltops in the Zona Cafetera. Continue to climb and there’s Bogotá, the bustling cradle of Colombia and third-highest capital city in the world. Throw in another few thousand meters and you’ll find snowcapped peaks, high-altitude lakes and the eerie, unique vegetation of the páramo (high-mountain plains). The bottom drops out as the Andes give way to Los Llanos, a 550,000-sq-km swath of tropical grasslands shared with Venezuela, often called the Serengeti of South America.

Colombia’s varied terrain is fertile ground for outdoor adventurers to dive, climb, raft, trek and soar. San Gil is the undisputed adventure capital, but Colombia boasts alfresco pleasures in all corners. Some of the continent’s most iconic trekking is here, and is dramatically varied: Ciudad Perdida is a multi-day jungle walk to the ancient ruins of the Tayrona civilization, while numerous ascents inside Parque Nacional Natural El Cocuy place intrepid hikers among the highest reaches of the Andes. Providencia’s world-class reef spells aquatic heaven for scuba divers, and whale-watchers on the Pacific coast can see majestic humpbacks in the wild.

A wealth of ancient civilizations left behind a fascinating spread of archaeological and cultural sites throughout Colombia. The one-time Tayrona capital, Ciudad Perdida, built between the 11th and 14th centuries, is one of the continent’s most ancient cities, arguably second only to Machu Picchu. Equally mythical is San Agustín, where more than 500 life-sized ancient sculpted statues – some 5000 years old and of enigmatic origin – dot the surrounding countryside. And then there’s Tierradentro, where elaborate underground tombs scooped out by an unknown people add even more mystique to Colombia’s past.

After walking along the sacred axis (Via Crucis), visitors will get to know the different stations of the Salt Cathedral, then descend into the depths of the Cathedral and reach the large central dome where it is possible to see the largest underground cross, the largest ceremonial hall and a beautiful boulevard.

After breakfast, you’ll transfer from your hotel for a full-day excursion to one of the crown jewels of Colombia’s Antioquia region: the lakeside town of Guatapé.  Founded in 1811 this town now sits on the reservoir of a hydroelectric dam that was built in the late 1960s, where more than 7.5 square miles (2,000 hectares) were flooded to create the dam. The incredible beauty of the reservoir and the views of the lake’s lush vegetation are unforgettable. Ferries will take visitors to recreational areas on neighbouring islands and to see the former Pablo Escobar Mansion. The boardwalk on the water is lined with vendors selling food and regional handicrafts. These tiles in bright colours and patterns are connected to life in the community, telling the story of the town and the beliefs of the people. From the lake we will see the Piedra del Peñol (over 600 feet high (183 metres). A staircase built into the side of the rock, where visitors can climb over 600 steps to the top, where they will find restaurants, souvenir shops and an incredible panorama. Cartagena was the place where the treasures looted from the Incas by the Spaniards and the gold and silver treasures from the mines of Peru and Bolivia were stored to be sent to Spain. For this reason, the city was often the object of desire of many pirates. We will continue to the Historic Colonial Centre and stop for a fruit juice drink or an Arepa (typical Colombian snack). During the tour through the Historical Centre, we will visit the historical buildings and important churches. If you do not wish to return to the hotel, you can continue the tour discovering the City of the Sun, go shopping and admire the sunset at the Café del Mar on the city walls. Overnight stay.

After enjoying a buffet lunch, you will have time to relax and sunbathe. An optional add-on is to rent a kayak and embark on a two or three-hour paddling excursion before returning to Cartagena in the late afternoon.
Included: Transportation by boat (round trip) – Local lunch – fish or chicken with rice and coconut salad.
